The last two days I have been teaching a course for managers of a multinational. Participants were discouraged and somewhat angry with the hostile environment in which they have to develop their work, and aggressive behavior of their bosses. One of the first ideas that counted in the course is the difference between the Circle preoccupation and circle of influence.
The Circle preoccupation is the area in which we can not influence, control switch, and yet we generates enormous stress and anxiety. Clear examples are the economic crisis, government policy or behavior of my boss. The circle of influence is the area where we can influence, which is basically my decisions, my behavior and my actions. Namely, do I have to improve, change or stop doing.
Everything is a matter of attention. That on which we focus in our lives is something that inevitably grows. If we put our focus and energy in the Circle of Concern, this will grow to choke up becoming destroy my confidence and safety.
However, if I focus all my energy on the circle of influence, what can I do, change or improve, my circle of concern is progressively reduced to almost nothing. This is the attitude of the leaders, professionals successfully.
During, participants, despite knowing the concept from the beginning, fell again and again in the circle of concern, complaining about your organization's environment, the behavior of your boss, lack of rigor and seriousness of their peers, etc.. Again and again I insisted them not wearing out your energy there, and inviting them repeatedly that will focus on your circle of influence. How difficult it is to avoid the temptation to complain, me the victim and do nothing to resolve it! However, the consequences for my welfare and my productivity are absolutely dire.
And you? In which of the two circles you focalizas more often?
