When I teach courses Stress Management I always stress that is directly connected to the performance. Say they are two sides of the same coin. Many people are surprised, as it is usually the belief that the techniques and strategies for managing stress are just for that: to manage stress, to feel better, to be more relaxed.
Already is valuable to achieve react calmly and moderation, in a frenetic world in which we live as, with very high and exacting demands of social and labor. It is very important to handle the pressure without losing his temper at work. However, when we work sustainably with techniques such as abdominal breathing, visualization or meditation, we will achieve much more. We will be able to increase our concentration and performance spectacular levels. Why? As said earlier, the stress is directly related to the performance. A more prolonged stress, lower yield. A more continuous stress, less mental clarity and greater dispersion.
Basically what we get with the attention techniques is to shift our attention from what we stress originates mainly: our thoughts about reality. So I call attention techniques, but meditation is an unfortunate name since meditation is not about nothing, but to pay attention to the present moment tangibles as our breathing, sounds, silence, traffic, our bodily sensations, etc..
These techniques fail lower our brain waves Alpha waves or Zheta (under Beta waves which are emitted by our brains when we are aware), which are related to performance, maximum speed of learning and memory, the mental clarity and emotional balance, according to numerous scientific research. Elite athletes are well aware of these effects and consciously practice. Why not us? Our performance and concentration will increase exponentially, well as our stress management.
