Sorry. There are no quick fixes or magic recipes to achieve our goals and to enhance our strengths and to improve our weaknesses. It is important that we assume once, because otherwise we will leave us once again duped by charlatans, vendors smoke and opportunistic.
Every day I check that managers have an obsessive desire to resolve conflicts and problems immediately and almost magical, effortlessly and quickly. También observo cómo algunos directores de desarrollo o RRHH pretenden solucionar todos los problemas de su empresa o de un Departamento con un curso de 16 hours.
As can be seen, short-termism prevails in business and management. In a frantic and stressful world, the temptation is to pretend that things will change in an instant and also, forever. But the reality is that it does not work well. The real change, which remains forever and is the generator of excellence, which is achieved through habits.
A habit is a behavior that have incorporated automatically and unconsciously our life, and it costs no effort performed by. A simple example would lead. At first we need to put all our focus on the task of driving the car, shift gears, meet traffic signals, etc.. Until there comes a time when we do unconsciously, without any mental effort, using the minimum energy. Our brain has automated all actions or behaviors necessary, it has become a habit.
Habit is a mechanism in our brain that has to do with its configuration, since its main function is to save and optimize energy for survival and normal functioning of our body. When we add a new behavior, and listen more than talk, A strategic meeting with my team every month, feedback or ask my colleagues, it costs much.
However, when we repeat this behavior again and again, our brain is generating neural connections stronger each time related to the conduct. It is as if our mind, upon receiving the message that a behavior or action is repeated, try him as right, and repeated over and over, hosts it in the unconscious as part of their programming. We are building a sustainable habit.
Only in this way can we incorporate real changes to improve our skills, to achieve our goals. Change is not about a single action, but many actions in the same direction, repeated dozens of times until you need to use energy or mental effort to do so…But How often is it necessary to repeat an action to incorporate as a sustainable habit?
Was William James, one of the fathers of modern psychology, who introduced the theory 21 days. James was also a pioneer regarding the neuroplasticity of the brain today demostradísima, and delved into the subject of habits, advocating that we can learn a skill and acquire a habit, which alters our brain structure. According to James, to conduct or behavior becomes a habit and unconscious sustainable, is necessary to repeat such conduct by a minimum of 21 days.
This theory can be extended to any actions or behaviors we want to incorporate into our unconscious as positive habits. For example, whether it is an action that developed the 5 working days of the week, then, would have to repeat this action for 4 weeks and one day to become a habit (because that would add 21 days), whereas if it is a behavior or task performed only once a week, would be repeated during 21 consecutive weeks for it to become a habit.
The power of positive habits gradually introduce in our professional life is awesome. A powerful discipline and a strong will begins to permeate our personality and character, security planning and leadership increasingly.
Habits have a direct connection to excellence. If one aspires to be a recognized leader in any environment, no other way. There are no shortcuts or magic recipes, as I said before, but, persevering effort focused on one goal. Not for nothing, great Stephen R. Covey his famous book entitled “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” because he knew the true leaders must plant positive habits to produce the fruits of success and excellence. Aristotle also said it: “We are what we do every day. So that excellence is not an act, but a habit”.
